About the Lion Trail

The idea for the Lion Trail came about when local travel journalist, Matthew Sterne, went for a stroll one Sunday morning. He started in the trendy neighbourhood of Sea Point and headed up Signal Hill ridge, looped around the fynbos-clad Lion’s Head, entered into the forests of The Glen, popped out on the white sands of Clifton Beach and headed home along the iconic Sea Point Promenade.

In just a few hours, he passed through city streets, mountains, a forest, coastal trails, sandy beaches and a promenade. There’s not many places in the world you can do such a thing. And that, he realised, was the ideal way to show how diverse Cape Town is. With the help of a local food expert, he added two picnic stops featuring delicious local drinks and snacks, partnered with an e-scooter company to finish off the tour off on a high – and The Lion Trail was born.

“The Lion Trail is the best way to truly understand just how beautiful and diverse Cape Town really is.”
